Abstract
This theoretical study clarifies why learner-centeredness is urgently needed in contemporary Buddhist education and what it should mean in Buddhist terms. Korean Buddhist education has not fully moved beyond a provider- and teacher-centered structure organized around monastic traditions, scriptures, lectures, and transmission. At the same time, recent forms of “hip Buddhism” have attracted younger generations through festivals, merchandise, music, meditation, and lifestyle experiences. These developments lower psychological barriers and create valuable points of contact; however, cultural favorability and episodic participation do not automatically lead to religious reflection, sustained practice, commitment, or community participation. The central educational task is therefore to move beyond both doctrinal transmission without learners and entertainment without depth. Through literature review and conceptual analysis, this study integrates humanistic education, self-determination theory, constructivism, experiential learning, transformative learning, differentiated instruction, and learner-centered teaching with Buddhist concepts of providing medicine according to illness, teaching according to the audience’s capacities, skillful means, timely mutual responsiveness, Buddha-nature, and the arousal of aspiration. Learner-centeredness in Buddhist education is defined not as compliance with learners’ present preferences, but as a relational and transformative pedagogical principle that carefully considers their capacities, suffering, lived experience, developmental level, and relational context, and helps transform cultural interest into existential questions, doctrinal understanding, reflection, practice, and compassionate participation. Seven principles are proposed: diagnosing suffering and readiness, facilitating autonomous aspiration, pedagogical translation, cycling through experience-reflection-conceptualization- practice, relational and timely scaffolding, staged deepening with community connection, and formative assessment grounded in compassion. The study argues that learner-centeredness is essential for preserving both the accessibility and the religious depth of Buddhist education.
