말라왕조와 샤왕조는 카트만두 계곡을 연속적으로 통치하며, 유사한 종교 전통을 유지하고 있었던 왕조들이다. 특별한 왕가의 여신을 모셔온 것도 두 왕조의 공통점이다. 18세기에 샤왕조가 카트만두 계곡의 권력을 통합하게 되면서 고르카에서 카트만두로 이들의 왕실이 이동하게 되고, 두 지역에서 전승되어 오던 왕실 나바라뜨라 의례도 완전히 재편되는 과정을 거친다. 결과적으로 고르카 뿐만 아니라 카트만두에서도 나바라뜨라 의례는 샤왕조를 위해 강화된 의례복합체를 형성하게 된다. 이러한 의례들의 통합을 이끌어내기 위해서 두 가지의 다른 전략들이 작용했을 것으로 보인다. 즉, 카트만두 계곡 내에 존속해왔던 말라왕조의 의례들은 거의 변함없이 존치시킨 반면, 샤왕조의 의례는 새로운 의례절차, 사제, 의례시기 등을 추가하여, 과거 말라왕조의 왕실 나바라뜨라 의례의 권위를 이어받으면서, 새로이 확장된 형태의 나바라뜨라 의례는 샤왕조를 위해 강화된 형태를 띠도록 변형된다.
Astrid Zotter examines the textual sources for the Malla(1200–1768) and Shah (1768–2008) dynasties of Kathmandu through ethnohistorical method. In this chapter, Zotter compares the ritual procedures of both courts to reconsider the relationship between the two dynasties. She complicates the received history of Nepal’s royal rituals by showing how the Shahs adopted rites, deities, and specialists of the previous dynasty while advancing their own ritual culture.
