안연은 『실담장』에서 네 종류의 문자를 말하고 있다. 위작자, 망계자, 암추자, 진실자가 그것이다. 위작자는 경전 전체가 위작이거나 경전 중 나타나는 독특한 문자를, 망계자는 세간 기예를 위한 문자나 외도들의 문자를, 암추자는 원칙과 상관없이 또 다른 목적을 위해 사용할 수 있는 문자를, 진실자는 실담장의 원칙에 충실하여 모자람이 없는 문자를 말한다. 이처럼 안연의 사종문자는 일반적인 문자의 형태를 말하는 것이 아니라, 『실담장』을 찬술할 당시 실담범자의 문법적 규칙이었던 실담장을 정확하게 파악하고 표기하기 위한 문자의 유형을 말한다. 안연에 의하면, 신라 월충의 위작이 『석마하연론』이고, 또 그 안의 독특한 범자ㆍ한자도 아닌 진언문자 또한 위작자이고, a阿와 u漚를 포함한 총 72자의 세간 글자와 64종의 세간 기예를 위한 문자가 망계자이다. 그리고 『대실담장』에서의 임의로 결합된 범자와 『혜원장』 12장이 암추자이고, 지광의 실담장 18장을 갖춘 『실담자기』가 진실자라고 하였다. 이상의 사종문자를 통해 종국에는 실담장 18장 구성을 가장 뛰어난 것으로 여기고 이를 통해 실담범자의 종교적 상징성까지도 안연은 강조한 것이라고 할 수 있다.
Annen is speaking four types of letters in the Shittanzō. Literally speaking, a counterfeit letter, a miscalculated letter, an uncharacterized letter, a true letter. Uijakja is referring to the whole scripture as a forgery or to a unique character that appears during the scripture, Manggyeja refers to the letters of the people of the world for their skills and art, or to the letters of non-Buddhist, Amchuja refers to a character that can be used for another purpose, regardless of principle, and Jinsilja refers to a letter that is faithful to the principle of siddhavastu and has no shortage. As such, Annen's four-letter words do not refer to the general form of characters, it refers to the type of characters for accurately identifying and marking siddhavastu, which was the grammatical rule of Siddhamātṛkā-type letter at the time of writing the Shittanzō. According to Annen’s words, Shi moheyan lun was written by Silla Wolchung, in addition, the unique mantra in it, not Sanskrit or Chinese characters, are also counterfeiters, a total of 72 characters, including a and u, and 64 types of characters for fine arts are Manggyeja. Sanskrit, who is arbitrarily combined in the Daesildamjang, and Chapter 12 of the Hyewonjang is Amchuja, Ji Gwang's book with 18 chapters of the Sildamjagi was called Jinsilja. In the end, the composition of Chapter 18 of the siddhavastu was considered the most excellent through the above four types of letters, and through this, it can be said that the religious symbolism of Siddhamātṛkā-type letter was emphasized by Annen.
